Ethnic Groups

Five species- Humans, Elves, Erinans, Felikins, and Tabaxi- have an ethnic group indigenous to Mōja, and all use the Martingalen demonym.

Qoivore (Human): Originating from the Qoivo grasslands of central and eastern Mōja, this Human ethnic group has a pale to dark brown skin complexion, with a high instance of freckling and red undertones. Roughly thirty to forty percent of the population also suffer from vitiligo and lose pigmentation in their skin as they age or from stress. Their irises are generally in shades of blue, green, brown, gold, or grey, and thirty to forty percent of the population have epicanthic folds (a small fold of skin around the eyes that gives the eyes a more ovaloid shape in appearance, generally in the top eyelid). Their hair is generally thick with a wavy or curly texture, and often in shades of brown, blonde, red, black, grey, pink, and blue, with a low instance of balding with age. The average adult Qoivore woman stands at 1.8 metres (5 feet 10 inches) tall and weighs seventy kilograms (154 pounds), and the average Qoivore man stands at 1.9 metres (6 feet 2 inches) tall and weighs eighty kilograms (176 pounds). Like most Human ethnic groups, a pregnancy will normally result in one child, but twins are not unheard of.

Vethire (Felikin): Originating from the Vethi tundra of southern Mōja, this Felikin ethnic group has dense fur in solid shades of brown, grey, or white, with lighter shades on the face and front and black tufts on the ears and on the end of their short tail, with longer fur on the cheeks. The skin on their palms, soles, nose, and inside of ears is a light pink to dark brown complexion. Their irises are typically in shades of green, brown, or gold, but blue is not uncommon. There is very little difference between the sexes other than males being larger. The average Vethire female stands at 1.8 metres (5 feet 10 inches) tall and weighs seventy kilograms (154 pounds), and the average Vethire male stands at 1.9 metres (6 feet 2 inches) tall and weighs eighty kilograms (176 pounds). Like most Felikin ethnic groups, pregnancies will normally result in one to three cubs.

Deare (Tabaxi): Originating from the Dea rainforest of northern Mōja, this Tabaxi ethnic group has fur in shades of yellow to dark orange with black to brown rosette spots, with unpatterned white fur on the chest, abdomen, and inside of arms and legs. Melanistic (solid black fur) individuals are not uncommon. Their irises are generally in shades of gold, brown, or green, but blue is not uncommon. The skin on their palms, soles, nose, and inside of ears is a pale to dark brown complexion. There is very little difference between the sexes, other than males being typically larger. The average female Deare stands at 2 metres (6 feet 6 inches) tall and weighs ninety kilograms (198 pounds), and the average male Deare stands at 2.2 metres (7 feet 2 inches) and weighs one hundred kilograms (220 pounds). Like most Tabaxi ethnic groups, pregnancies will typically result in one or two cubs.

A portion of the population are Felikin-Tabaxi hybrids, with most being first- or second-generation hybrids. These individuals are highly diverse, but many will resemble a Vethire with Deare colouration, or a Deare with thicker fur. These individuals will often just refer to themselves as Martingale, Vethdeare, or Dethire.

Kūkure (Erinan): Originating from the Kūku Archipelago of south-eastern Mōja, this Erinan ethnic group has a stocky body covered in short fur in shades of light brown to gold, with their back being covered in short keratinous spines of white to black colouration. Their irises are generally in shades of brown, green, or blue. The skin on their palms, soles, nose, and inside of ears is a light to dark brown complexion. The average adult Kūkure stands at 1.5 metres (4 feet 11 inches) tall, and the average male (boar) weighs sixty kilograms (132 pounds) and the average female (sow) weighs fifty kilograms (110 pounds). Like most Erinan ethnic groups, a pregnancy will typically result in two to three pups.

Mapure (Elf): Originating from the Mapu desert of western Mōja, this Elven ethnic group has a light to dark brown skin complexion with red undertones. Their irises are typically in shades of green, blue, gold, or purple. Their hair is thick with a wavy or curly texture and comes in shades of brown, black, blue, pink, or red. Like all Elves, the pinnae (external cartilage and skin) of their ears are elongated and pointed, and Mapure ears are typically at a 90-degree angle from the head. Mapure are taller than most Elves with the average adult being 2 metres (6 feet 6 inches) tall and weighs ninety kilograms (198 pounds). Like most Elven ethnic groups, a pregnancy will typically result in a single child, but twins are not uncommon.

A portion of the population are Human-Elf hybrids, with most being first- or second-generation hybrids. Like the Felikin-Tabaxi hybrids, these individuals will typically refer to themselves as Martingale, or occasionally as Mapqoire or Qoipure. They are highly diverse, but many will resemble a tall Qoivore or short Mapure with ears roughly Qoivore sized but pointed.

Demographics and Geography

Nation Size

The Diarchy of Martingale encompasses thirty star-systems and includes eighty-five planets. The capital planet is Mōja in the Chizuma system and has a total population of seven billion (7.3 billion; 298 AGW Galactic Census). The official capital city is Bruxūmaua City on Mōja, and has a population of roughly one million (1.7 million; 298 AGW Galactic Census). The most populous city is Robronace, also on Mōja, and has a population of six million (6.8 million; 298 AGW Galactic Census).

Demographic Breakdown

All five ethnic groups make up roughly the same portion of the population, at nineteen percent each, and the remaining five percent consist of migrant ethnic groups (298 AGW Galactic Census).

The vast majority of migrants originate from the Republic of Alexia, mostly Wei and Okumi. Other migrant groups originate from the Triadic Republic of Baxan, the Republic of Wïker, the Empire of Amberin, the Republic of Eswar, the Republic of Ēvē, the Tsardom of Ivatrov, the Republic of Dorado, and the Republic of Tōnabi.

Government and Politics

Government Structure and Organisation

The Diarchy of Martingale, natively Dokukea vřū Martingale, is a constitutional diarchy with and Empress and Emperor as heads of state and government, and a publicly elected Empirical Senate. Elections are held every five years, and all citizens over the age of eighteen are legally required to vote.

The Diarchy of Martingale is led by two royal families; the Martinez and the Gale families. The Empress is of the Gale family, and is succeeded by her eldest daughter (or female descendant) upon her abdication at sixty-five or her death, and the Gale family are historically Qoivore. The Emperor is of the Martinez family, and is succeeded by his eldest son (or male descendant) upon his death or abdication at sixty-five, and the Martinez family are historically Deare. The two royal families are legally unable to inter-marry, as to prevent one family from ruling, and this is outlined in the Martingale Constitution. The Empress, Emperor, and their immediate families (and all ruling royals) are ineligible to vote; upon marry a future ruling royal, citizens must relinquish their right to vote.

The Empirical Senate supports the rule of the Martinez and Gale families, and represents the interests of ‘the people’. The Senate consists of thirty Senators, each democratically elected to represent one of the star-systems, as well as the Ministers of the twelve ministries. Duchesses and Dukes are also welcome to sit in on senate meetings, and often will take turns with their Senator to represent their system. All senators must be a citizen to their system and over the age of twenty-four, and they can serve an unlimited number of terms until they are unelected or reach sixty-five. The twelve ministries each have their own requirements, but they are nominated by the Senate and the Empress and Emperor elect them to their positions, and they normally held a higher managerial position within their ministry. Ministers can serve a maximum of four terms, or until they reach sixty-five years old.

Each system is governed by the elected Senator as well as their System Senate consisting of elected representatives from each planet (Governor), local representatives from the twelve ministries, and a member of the two royal families; a Duchess of the Gale family, and a Duke of the Martinez family. Each planet is governed by an elected Governor, and their Planetary Senate consisting of elected representatives of each province (Councillor) and a member from the two families; a Countess of the Gale family and a Count of the Martinez family. Each province is led by a Councillor and their council of mayors and the Baroness of the Gale family and Baron of the Martinez family. Each city is led by a democratically elected mayor. All elected positions are open to all citizens of that region (city, province, planet) who are over the age of twenty-four and under the age of sixty-five, and they can serve an unlimited number of terms. All royal positions (Duchess/Duke, Countess/Count, and Baroness/Baron) are granted by the Empress and Emperor, but will most often be the child of the current royal. It is not uncommon, however, for the Empress/Emperor to name a younger sibling as the Duchess or Duke of a system, and dethroning the previous royal. As per the Martingale Constitution, non-leading royals are expected to function as ordinary citizens.

As of 294 AGW the Empress of Martingale is Empress Lawra Lume Jēfoe-Topo Gale-Theverne, and as of 297 AGW, the Emperor is Emperor Lūk Kwin Zoro-Ñyadonio Cetesdēt-Martinez. Empress Lawra is the first Human-Elf Empress in a century.

Laws and Justice

The Ministry of Law and Justice (MLJ) is responsible for the Martingale Judicial System. All lawyers working within the Diarchy of Martingale must be registered with the MLJ. The Ministry is also responsible for ensuring that the royals and the senate are following the laws set out within the Martingale Constitution, and the MLJ will also represent the Diarchy in all legal matters.

All Martingale citizens are entitled to a free and fair trial for any and all instances of supposed law-breaking. All individuals are treated as innocent until proven guilty. They have the right to choose their own legal representative and will be tried in front of a jury of their peers. This jury will consist of twelve individuals older than eighteen from the province the trial is held in, all randomly selected. The juries’ identities will be kept secret, and individuals who know any member of either party are excluded.

The Martingale Judicial System believes that only the most heinous of crimes deserve incarceration, and most guilty verdicts will be met with a fine and community service, with fines scaled based on the individual’s income e.g., if the guilty party earns more, they will be fined a higher amount. The only crimes within the Diarchy that are seen as heinous enough for incarceration include rape, abuse of a minor or animal, abuse of a spouse, murder, and treason. These individuals will be housed in a penitentiary facility for an extended period of time. There, they will receive therapy and counselling to understand what they did was wrong and why. They will also often be made to pay for any and all medical treatments and therapy that the victim will need to go through due to their crimes. Mass murders, pirate captains, and terrorists are handed to the Galactic Department of Law and Justice (DLJ), as per Galactic Law, although the Diarchy of Martingale apposes the death penalty these crimes are met with within the DLJ.

The Diarchy of Martingale are one of the original signers of the Ikria Accords in 258 BGW, and have such outlawed slavery within the Diarchy. The Diarchy of Martingale arrests any slave traders found within their territories, and dependent on extradition treaties, will either hold onto them indefinitely, or return them to their home nation. Any slaves found within their territory are freed and offered the opportunity to become a citizen of the Diarchy of Martingale, and asylum is offered to any slave that escapes and makes it to their territory. The enslavement of any Martingale citizen is met with harsh retaliation.

Martingale Law Enforcement is governed by the Ministry of Law and Justice. Law Enforcement Officers are required to have a degree in law or social services, and have training in mental health management, crises management, and de-escalation. They, along with the general public, are not allowed to own or carry weapons. The exception to this includes low-voltage tasers and stunners, and deterrent sprays, and all citizens are required to have training in the safe usage of these weapons, and in the case of stunners, must be registered with their local government.

Diplomacy and Trade

The Diarchy of Martingale is a member of the Buntai Union, and has close ties with the Republic of Alexia, the Republic of Ēvē, the Empire of Amberin, the Republic of Wïker, the Triadic Republic of Baxan, and the Republic of Owenós. The Diarchy is also a member nation of the Galactic Government, and many Martingale citizens work within the Department of Health and Medicine, the Department of Science and Technology, and the Department of Magic and Supernatural Affairs. The Diarchy have a negative relationship with the Triarchy of Jeonchae, due to the latter’s refusal to sign the Ikria Accords. Citizens from Jeonchae are unwelcome within the Diarchy, excluding those escaping slavery. The Diarchy of Martingale has separate Commercial Trade Pacts with the Republic of Tōnabi, the Republic of Aisor, and the Republic of Zokiakos.

Major exports of the Diarchy of Martingale include education (medicine, robotics), animal products (aquaria, arthroculture, avian, herpetoculture, rodentia, canine), agricultural products (maple syrup, fruits), exotic plants and animals, electronics, robots and robotics, beauty products, fashion (human), and personnel (entertainment, medical, engineers). Major imports include animal products (canine, feline, avian, herpetoculture), cheese, confectionary, fashion (human), beauty products, exotic plants and animals, precious gems/stones, metals, silk, and vehicles (land, space).

War and Combat

The Martingale Ministry of Defence is the bureaucratic and executive branch of the Martingale Defence Force (Dīrdīj Mai vřū Martingale). The Martingale Defence Force is broken into four other branches, the Martingale Army (Vřes vřū Martingale), the Martingale Navy (Tio vřū Martingale), the Martingale Airforce (Pabmai vřū Martingale), and the Martingale Spaceforce (Taiemai vřū Martingale). The main purposes for the Martingale Defence Force are to defend and patrol the borders of the Diarchy of Martingale, to capture and contain pirates, to aid local law enforcement in taking down hostile or large crime syndicates, to take down terrorist organisations working within the Diarchy of Martingale, to respond to and aid in natural disasters, and to assist allies of the Diarchy of Martingale. Enlistment within the defence force is voluntary, and applicants can select which branch they would like to join. Applicants must be over the age of eighteen and be physically and mentally fit enough for the roles applied for.

The Martingale Defence Forces have two main uniforms:

Ceremonial Dress (Yēsawe Tane):

Field Dress (Combat Uniform) (Tmu Tane):

Weaponry used by the Martingale soldiers consists of Mevaraica, a bola; Zlōdyeth, a club made from wood with short obsidian blades imbedded in it; Knīcō, a projectile-based weapon that uses gunpowder to fire steel or obsidian bullets; and Řowcō, an energy-based weapon that fires blasts of energy that stun opponents. Soldiers are trained to safely and effectively use all four weapons, as well as a variety of hand-to-hand combat styles. They are trained to disarm and stun opponents instead of the severely injure or kill, and all for the purpose of defence.

Language

The main and native language of the Diarchy of Martingale is Martingale Estilo. Martingale Estilo consists of 26 consonants, 10 vowels, and 6 diphthongs. The sentence structure is subject-object-verb; the sentence “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog” would read that way (El zō cave Zoro saltarkī encima el kudyuv Pero). Basic is the most common second language spoken. Other minor languages include Alexugo, Baxanspråk, Oweglós, Amberiñ, Wïkersei, and Zodiaklōm.

Martingale Sign (Martingale Mudoletra) is the official sign language of the Diarchy of Martingale and is used by seventy percent of the population. It is mostly used by the deaf and hard of hearing community, as well as hunting and fishing communities. It is widely taught in Martingale schools, and most Martingalen can use a few basic signs. Other sign languages used include Alexugo Tethei, Oweglós Èuadzua, Wïkersei Fjevwulpen, Basic Sign, and Baxanspråk Taiwödeski.

Naming

Martingale names can be incredibly long, consisting of a first name, and second name, a clan name, and a family name. Female first and second names end in vowels, and common names include Lawra, Olivia, Sofia, Eztli, Xoco, Tapēsa, Suka, and Paollu. Traditional female names tend to have meanings and connotations of beautiful (shoui: Shou, Shoui), graceful (lusme: Lusme, Luse, Lume), strong (řatai: Řatai, Ratai, Rai, Tai), morning (yut: Yuta, Yuti), day (mua; Mua, Muana), sunshine (jīkva: Jīva, Jiva, Jivana), and wise (: Zō, Zo, Zona). Male first and second names end in consonants, and common names include Lūk, Pablon, Ollin, Yolnan, Felip, Nuvuk, Itzen, and Tatkret. Traditional male names tend to have meanings and connotations of brave (korayudo: Koran, Korayudon, Yudon, Korav), night (thuw: Thuw, Thuwan, Thuwn), moon (krom: Krom, Kroman), fast (vyolmūs: Vyolmūs, Vyol, Mūs, Olmūs), big (tu: Tun, Tunan, Tunav, Tunak), tough (clif: Clif, Clifan, Clifak), and calm (: Qīn, Qinav, Kwin). Modern names tend to be transliterated versions of foreign names.

Clan and family names are gender specific. An individual receives their clan name from their opposite sex parent and their family name from their same sex parent e.g., a daughter will receive her father’s clan name and her mother’s family name. In the instance of same-sex and nonbinary parents, the eldest will take the position of ‘mother’. Clan names are normally the name of a plant or animal e.g., Zoro (fox), Arvik (whale), Piñaorpik (pine tree). Family names are based on an occupation or locale of an ancestor. Example family names include Reoivōne (herder), Theverne (hunter), Cetesdēt (from the city of Cetes), and Maleyodēt (from the village of Maleyo).

Upon marriage, both couples will hyphenate their family and clan names, with the woman’s (or eldest) names first e.g., Lawra Mua and Lūk Clif Arvik-Zoro Reoivōne-Cetesdēt.
